More about this scene

Though cars were more affordable by the 1950s, engines, being thirstier by today's standards, needed more frequent refueling. Kirkpatrick's, like many a village garage, provided services once the domain of the wayside blacksmith – keeping conveyances in running order. Filling up was once a leisurely, almost social business performed by the proprietor; here once the car was catered for you could even top up next door with tea.
