Living In Downscourt Rd c.1967 1973

A Memory of Purley.

I lived near the top of Downscourt Rd, my back garden exiting in St James Rd. Every day I would walk up and down that hill to Roke Primary and later around the local area delivering newspapers for 'Scobles' the newsagent on Godstone Rd. I was a choirister at St.James Church and Mr Warner the choirmaster had a rolled up newspaper called the 'Bonker' which he would tap us with if we misbehaved (not sure if that would be allowed now!). I was also a member of the youth club that met in the original church hall in Lower Road. At one point I had a summer job at Wright Scientific also in Lower Road, polishing and cutting test tubes.

Comments & Feedback

I grew up in Ingleboro Drive from 1955 until the late 70s. I also had a paper round at Scobles and remember making my way down St James Road in the dark and the snow in Winter to do it. I was also in the choir at St James Church and remember the rolled up paper. I didn't know, or had forgotten, that it had a name, but he would call us Dunderhead as he whacked us with it. I went to cubs in a church hall in Lower Road. It must be the same one. Ah, memories.
