Living And Working In Sale

A Memory of Sale.

In 1960-63 I lived in Stanley Grove off School Rd which is where they now have the Arndale. We moved into a pre-fab in Ashbourne Crescent at Sale Moor when they had plans for the Arndale. My first job was at Boots Chemist on School Rd in 1962 (not far to go to get to work). Later around 1964 I worked at Macfisheries also in School Rd opposite Woolworths, and my mum worked at George Masons in '62.
When I was at school my cousin Brian and I used to have to go to the launderette on Ashfield Rd which was run by two ladies, and when the washing had had it's second soap in, there was about 20 mins before it was finished so we used to dash off to Woolworths to spend our 2/6p spends. We never got back on time and were constantly in trouble with the washer ladies because they had to get our washing out of the dryer for us, fond memories.
There used to be two collie dogs running around School Rd, one was blind and the other one used to lead it by holding the lead in it's mouth, and stopped at Tatton Rd till the road was clear, then led the other dog over the road. I saw them often, and now wonder what it was all about; in those days and being only about 12 myself it didn't seem that unusual.
When we moved to Norris Rd, Sale Moor, near the 112 terminus, myself and me mum got jobs at Healds shop which was on the parade at the 113 bus terminus and worked there for about 2yrs.
I was born in Sale and lived there till I was about 25 in various places and have many many happy memories. Every few years I return to see the area and all the addresses I lived at, I remember the pub on Cross st called The Volunteer I think and also Nursery Needs shop on that road, and the Pride of Sale Coach depot near the Waggon and Horses. Ah lovely place was Sale then.
Some addresses I lived at: Southern Rd. Dane Rd. Harcourt Rd. Stanley Grove, Ashbourne Crescent, Norris Rd.
