I Know All The Memories Of Tynemouth

A Memory of Tynemouth.

I was born in North Shields and know all the photos shown ...was my school holidays. I married my husband, a Northumberland Fusilier from Haltwhistle in January 1959 and in April we left from Newcastle on Tyne on the Empire Fowey to Hong Kong. We came home to North Shields for a few months and left by air to Singapore and went to live in Ipoh Perak, Malaya. We came home to live in Tidworth, Hants then came to live in Mansfield, Notts, went to the West Midlands and finally returned to Northumberland and Cumbria and now live in a tiny village between Humshaugh and Wark on Tyne. But when summer comes, our feet take us to the coast, via Ponteland, Morpeth, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth and down to the fish quay for a meal on the quayside. A lot is gone from the docks, but in my memories eyes I see them all. I look for my ancestors in my family tree and find them from coast to coast. I have lived from coast to coast, and married a Northumberland Fusilier and for a time lived in Haltwhistle. Nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren cover all of England, many in the North and over the border in Scotland. I love all the North - my postcode is NE48 3AN.

Hello! I have just spotted your memory while trawling though the website - actually looking at place names for tea towels! - and Northumberland Fusiliers jumped at at me!

Your husband must have been stationed at Fenham Barracks. So was my father, from 1954-57 after arriving from Malaya. I found the Barracks to be such a contrast from the Tropics but with my new friends I soon settled in and had a great time. When Dad was demobbed we stayed in Newcastle and it was only after I married that I moved away, firstly to Germany- hubby was in the army - and then Compton Bassett in Wiltshire for a short period before a posting to Bordon in Hampshire and then back to Germany. Bill finished his 22 years in Nottingham, and this is where we have stayed, but oh how I miss the North East! It beakss my heart when I think that I no longer belong to that wonderful, beautiful part of Britain. I try to visit for a few days every year and every visit is such sweet-sorrow. I try to see, again, the old haunts though much of what I knew of old has now disappeared and replaced by new. One such place is Fenham Barracks and it is hardly recognisably! It really is a dig in my heart every time when another part is taken over by Civvy Street! We kids used to love climbing the trees - now gone!

If you are interested I have written my memories from that period "Beginning in Fenham Barracks."Also "This And That In Compton Barracks" Wiltshire. Recapturing my past helps in a small way.

I would love a response from you and indeed anyone else who has happy memories of the North East.

Best regards
Trish Bailey
