Angel Lane

A Memory of West Ham.

being a pupil at grove (or salway) primary school was handy as afterwards i would go with my mate, harry short, and visit his dad's pub, the red lion i think, opposite the theatre royal. we would play on the dumb waiter, pulling each other up and down, then go down to angel lane for pie and mash. my neighbours, the langans, used to be in charge of the theatre royal, so i was a regular visitor there too. watching many shows from the 'gods' for free and seeing many familiar faces from the telly. joan littlewood was running the shows then, with barbara windsor, brian murphy, yootha joyce being in some of the shows. when angel lane was no more, the stratford mall was built and is still there today.

Please accept my apologies for the misspellings of words, it wasn't until I was in my 40s that I was diagnosed with Dyslexia!

Sorry to hear John Aymer died last year , he was also in our class. I remember Steven Cockley he was like a rugby player with thick red hair . Remember the big white dog at the pub, spent a lot of time stroking it. Of course the fire at the co - op at the back of our school and was present when Grove school was demolished by builders. Hi Harry
I haven't seen any photos of the pub but I have a DVD of Sparrows Can't Sing, and some of the film was shot in Angel Lane, there's a good shot of the pub about 10 mins. Into the film with Mums with their prams standing outside. I remember your Dad, the pub and your lovely Pyrenean Mountain Dog, like a giant white bear, which I used to pass chips to under the gates and loved it if your Dad had the gates open and I would rush over to stroke your lovely dog.
