After the livestock market on Monday (the sheep market), Tuesday and Friday, animals would head out all over Lancashire.
Thousands of people were soon sucked into Carlisle, not just from the rest of Cumberland and Westmorland, but from as far afield as Lancashire, southern Scotland and Ireland.
The formal rose garden was reputed to be one of the finest in Lancashire.
