Nostalgic memories of Wembley's local history

Share your own memories of Wembley and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My name is Jim O'Hanlon. I am 66 years old. I have just discovered this site and have seen a couple of places written about which provoke many nice memories from my childhood and early teens. I remember Wembley well. It was a bustling town then (1960s). Two cinemas, the Odeon near Copeland School. I used to go and see the double feature on Saturday morning. The comedian,Norman Wisdom was a ...see more
Having only this week come across your website, with so many writing about their memories of Wembley, I felt inspired to add my memories too. I was born in Pettsgrove Avenue in 1941 and lived there until 1965 when I married a lovely man from the Western Isles. My name then was Sheila Razzall. I attended Sudbury Primary School, taking the short cut through Vale Farm, past the outdoor swimming pool on to the ...see more
I wrote this piece for a writing group exercise in April/May 2019, near my home in NE Scotland. LIttle did I know then that some of the memories would form part of my Mum's Eulogy just three months later. The day after her funeral, I took my husband, eldest son and his wife for a walk from Sudbury Town to Wembey High Street, Ealing Road, One Tree Hill and Horsenden. There may be a few touches ...see more
I was born in 1950 in Brampton Grove on Barn Hill and spent a lot of time playing in Barn Hill park especially around the pond. We used to toboggan down the hill in the snow and I remember breaking my front tooth on the rail of the toboggan. I have had a crown ever since! I was a real tom boy and loved climbing trees there.
I grew up in Regal way just off Preston Hill but was born in Shirehall Rd in 1938. My memories of living in Regal way were rather sketchy and am trying to jog my memory of my life there from 1938 until 1953. We attended the Catholic church called St Erconwalds and attended there as a family. We always sat at the front on the left side as I do to this day when I attend my church here where I live now . My brother and I were altar boys as were another set of brothers.
I was born in 16 Dagmar Avenue. Then moved to 95 Oakington Manor Drive when I was 4. Our house at OMD backed onto the stadium and I remember I was in the garden when England scored the winning goal of the World Cup in 1966. I was terrified by the roar and ran in crying. We used to play in Sherins Farm. Never any fear in those days (1964-1973) we played football ...see more
As a kid in the 50's, my friends and I used to cycle from Hanwell, around Horseden Hill and on to Wembley, specifically to see Henry Cooper. It took us ages to get there but once we got there, we used to ask Henry for some fruit because we were so hungry and he would throw 3 or 4 apples at us and then tell us to "Clear Off". We'd went nearly every Saturday and he was always kind to us local kids - although pretended ...see more

I grew up in Wembley (Monks Park area) and attended Oakington Manor Primary and then Wembley County Grammar. After school I worked and trained as a nursery nurse at Roundwood Park nursery in Willesden. I was married at Park Lane Methodist Church to my lovely husband in 1969 - 50 years ago! We then moved to Kent and now Hampshire but of course your photos and memories have now triggered so many of my own memories. Thank you!
My name is Jeanette Levin, but when I went to Wembley House School I was Jeanette Green. I lived at 2 Crawford Avenue. I remember Richard Model. I was born in 1935. My parents had a shop in the old Wembley Market, selling textiles. They were very popular. Another name I recall is Mary Price, a good friend of mine. My next school was Haberdashers' Askes School. Does anyone remember me?
