Wembley Happy Days!

A Memory of Wembley.

I was born in park royal hospital in 1955 and lived in Douglas avenue alperton until 1980. I remember going to Saturday matinee at the regal cinema, ice cream in demarcos who also did great coffee. Henry coopers fruit & veg stall on the corner opposite the village inn pub where I got drunk on vodka & lime one night! I remember the fabulous bakers opposite the market, there was always a queue for their bread. I remember shopping in blands with mum for material, as she made all my clothes when I was a kid. My dentist was J Aust who was a above a shop in the high street, next to Blands I think. I remember the green shield stamp shop where my mum would take her books full of stamps to buy a kettle or such like. I remember the first sainsbury's opening just near Henry coopers shop (which was actually his brothers shop). Sainsburys was small it had a counters both sides of a narrow aisle and women, with their hair tucked in white hats would pat the butter and cut cheese with wire cheese cutters, the shop smelt wonderful. Just like a hardware shop on the Ealing road in alperton, the owner used to scrub his shop floor with a wonderful smelling disinfectant everyday which would pervaded the shop - every time it think of it I can almost smell it - wonderful. I used to buy my sweets in the Chocolate Box on Ealing road I remember the owners had a Great Dane which was a soppy thing for such a big dog! I remember the golden egg, wimpey bar, the grove fish & chip shop, the captains table, the chequers pub, brent house where my dad worked before moving to the town hall opposite chalk hill estate. I remember a disco/club in the hotel near the stadium, can't remember the name. I remember the Angus steak house opposite the stadium, I thought I was the bees knees when I ate in there! I could go on forever such happy times. I now live in Ealing and pass through wembley now and again, I get upset every time when I see how much the place has changed - for the worse. My old mum and dad wouldn't recognise it now such a shame but typical of most inner city towns these days.

I remember all the shops you mentioned, my auntie 'Annette' (a big woman) lived in Chaplin road and was a barmaid in the fusilier pub opp the park. I went to college opp the chequers pub and spent many a lunch time in there. Every Sat morning spent in the bowling alley, once a year going to the N.M.E. pop concert in the empire pool, the only time where you saw the beatles-stones-the who- the small faces-gerry and the pacemakers and many more all on the same bill. Going down Ealing road now is not a patch on what it used to be, not recommended. GOOD TIMES.
I was born in park royal in 1956 lived in Wembley all my teenage years know what your talking about great days village inn with the tree in the public bar henry coopers fruit and veg stall opposite Copeland school for me pat rice was the headmaster and the night club at the hotel was called the string of pearls
String of Pearls! Thanks Peter I would never have remembered the name. I also ate at the Angus Steakhouse opposite on a few occasions and thought it and I was the bees knees. I wonder if our paths ever crossed? I passed through Wembley last weekend, I avoid going there unless I have to its so upsetting to see how much the whole area has become so run down. Sadly it seems to be happening to so many towns these days. I've lived in Ealing now for over 30 years and have seen many changes often not for the better.
I too remember all the places you mention and we also shared a dentist. When I went it was Blinkhorn & Aust but Mr Blinkhorn retired and Mr Aust took over. My Aunt lived in Douglas Avenue at number 4 their name was Guy. I recently saw a copy of the electoral roll for 1946 for Douglas Ave and recognised so many family names, Guy, Stentiford, Clarke, Eakland, Owen and my other Gt Aunt, Trowbridge at no 24 before the Mellors bought it. Amazing the things we remember isn't it.
I remember Peter Barber and his sister Susan. They may remember me as Titch
Hi Barbara, I lived at number 3 Douglas Avenue so number 4 must be the first house opposite? I wonder if we met or know each other? The name Guy rings a bell as does the Mellors. I remember the Chapmans living next door at number 5 and their son Philip who was a good mate of mine. The Thompson's lived at number 1 and were there for many, many years. I also remember Susan Barber. I went to Lyon Park juniors, Alperton secondary modern and Stanley Avenue schools.
Hi Jacky, I remember sharing a lot of those memories along side you. I worked as a Saturday girl in a grocer shop along Ealing Road. We spent many days in your front room drinking tea and putting the world to rights. We would jump on the train to Hammersmith Palais on Saturday nights, and shop for cheap jewellery in Woollies after school.. I think I also remember that you and your Mum cleaned an estate agents office a couple of evening a week at the top overlooking Station Grove, then we would clear off and do our own thing once your Mum had finished. Sometime I think we went to the Oldfield during the week, even though we really were too young. Oh and your Mum had a german shepherd that was bigger than her.
