Most buildings are of the limestone that has for many years been quarried from nearby Painswick Beacon, so the town sits comfortably on the ground from which it comes.
Firle, tucked beneath the South Downs and the 718ft-high Firle Beacon, has been the Gage family home for 500 years.
Built in 1794, the lighthouse originally had two platforms, each with a coal-fired beacon to warn shipping of the dangers of the Mixon Sands and Cherry Stone Rock.
The small square chapel on Rame Head is that of St Michael, built in the 14th century; it originally housed a beacon to guide ships into Plymouth Sound just round the corner.
As nearby Sheffield expanded, so did towns like Oughtibridge in the Don Valley.
The view is eastwards to Stonebarrow Hill and Cain's Folly (top left) and the familiar profile of Golden Cap (central skyline) with Thorncombe Beacon to the east (right).
