It is believed that Bainbridge was a settlement for woodsmen working in the great forest of Wensleydale. An annual custom associated with this tradition is the blowing of a forest horn every night from the end of September to Shrovetide.

My grandfather, Guy Metcalfe, played in Bainbridge Brass Band; nearly half the band were Metcalfes, all related. One of my ancestors (on my mother's side) was the famous hornblower on the village green.
