Further Memories

A Memory of Basingstoke.

Further to my previous memory of Basingstoke, and a reader mentioning Odys groceries shop, I too remember it well, also Yerburys hairdressers in Winton Sq and Giffords store. As well as that there was a tea shop on London Rd, The Good Hostess and on Hackwood Rd I remember Nancy Noyes bookshop. My grandparents had their golden wedding at the Venture in 1961.I also have fond memories of mapledurwell where a friend of my father was manager forACHutton a road haulage contractor who carried mainly Lansing Bagnell products all over the country.

Born here in 1942 and came back in 1993 after years moving around overseas and raising a family. Basingstoke Carnivals were the best in the south. Top of Town was closed to traffic on Monday evenings of carnival week for live music in two areas for dancing. The fantastic carnival paradeso on Thursday evenings so long it took over 2 hours to pass the 1000's who lined the streets to cheer the many floats. The 2 or 3 military bands taking part and the fabulous entertainment and huge fun fair.
Basing Road hospital (where Hampshire Clinic BUPA hospital is now) where I visited my maternal grandfather as he was in need of 24 hrs care the last couple of years of his life. The old fairground in Essex Road (by the Victory Roundabout now) and a hall where we organised rock and roll dances with friends who had a rock group and a skiffle group. Great fun. .... Ban the bomb marches from Aldermaston.... The pet shop in Wote Street run by Mr Wagstaff who let me buy 6 chicks. Took them home in a shoe box...mum took them back as we had no where to keep chickens...I was about 9 or 10. Great concerts/gigs at the Haymarket. 3 cinemas too. Loads of memories of growing up in Basingstoke...
