Born In Battersea

A Memory of Battersea.

I was born in Seldon House , my grans flat in 1947. (My father was born in Sheepcote Lane and my mum in Southolme Street.)
From there we moved to Burke House in Maysoule Road then onto Stroudley House on the Patmore Estate.
I went to Larkhall Lane primary school then on to Priory Grove Secondary school for girls.
I used to tap dance at the Doramy Vernon school in Friendship House on Wandsworth Road, she also held classes in a small studio in Clapham Juction,
I now live in Surrey but my heart will always remain in Battersea, I have such fond memories of Battersea and am proud to be linked with everything about it.
Can’t say I’m happy about the changes to the Power Station but pleased to see Battersea Park railway station has been reopened after all these years. I used to take the train from there to Work when I left school in the 60s.
When I go through there on the train to Victoria I can’t believe the changes, with the removal of the gasometer and loads of flats that have been built.
Can’t say I like change and still prefer it as it was in the old days.

The BBC had a programme called Battersea Boys years ago. They tracked a group of boys from birth, school, and work. Then it stopped. Wonder what happened to the project.
I’ve got a book called Battersea Boy, that I bought for my dad who was born in Sheepcote Lane, and a book called Battersea Girl.
I went to John Burns school in Wycliffe Road from 1960 -65. Timothy spall was in same class. Family lived at 19 Wycliffe Road I loved football and still have school photo 1964 with Albert alden, Trevor lee who went on to a very good level of football. I was an apprentice at Southampton for a few years later in my teens. Mt Airey was the PE teacher, I think he was from Rhodesia, a really great teacher, very supportive to all. Mrs Hughes was Headteacher still remember screaming and crying when my mum left me on first day at school Moved to Basingstoke in 1966 with London overspill.
