Ivey And Bill Humphreys

A Memory of Battersea.

In response to the comments made by the New Zealand lady who was born at 45 Winstanley Rd. Ivy Humphrey was in fact Maude. She was my Aunt Maude, my Mum's sister. The shop called Ivy's was her's as she inherited it from her first ( late) husband Mr. Humphreys. I visited the road many times during the 40s and 50s. Hard times but with a happy loving family

I lived in Meyrick road on the corner of Speke Road. The side of our house was opposite the Baptist church. My mum was great friends with Maude Ivy. She did all her shopping there and at Einchcombes opposite, She got her meat at Te butchers (I thik his name was Paul), her veg from Geakes opposite and we used Percy the barber next to Speke Hall. We got our shoes repaired at Barkers and our batteries at Barns, Frank's fish and chips were the best in town. for some reason mum rarely went into Foxwells aas she didn't like them. I know Maude had a daughter Doreen by her first marriage and a son wih Billt called Victor. Maude and Billy were moed to a flat in Wye Street when they built the Winstnley Estate. Ilost touch when my mum died and I joined the army.
Maude Humphreys, née Ivey, was my nan ( my Mum's Mum). My mum, Doreen, Dad, Ray and my sister, Karen and I lived over my Nanny Maude's shop Ivey's Stores, in Winstanley Road when my sister and I were born. We were all relocated to other parts of Battersea Wandsworth when the Council redeveloped Winstanley Road.
