Northcote Road Street Market

A Memory of Battersea.

I grew up here in the 50's and 60's and went to Belleville Road school and two of my uncles [Bill and Bob Bridges] used to have fruit stalls in the market. I have fond memories of that time and was wondering if anybody remembers me or my uncles from that time. John Lloyd

Hello, My family were from Wandsworth and Clapham Common. Although I didn't grow up in the area, we would visit my grandparents, in Clapham, and I would join my aunt on various trips to the Northcote market on Saturday mornings. Most of the street trders knew my aunt Joan, because she would carry out various sewing projects, from wedding dresses to alterations. I do remember 'John Lloyd', as one of the stalls we visitied.
Our family home was 2 Newtown Street. The family name Cooper. My dad Harry died here 1.1.1962 I was 8. Mum Mary and I lived here till 1968 when they knocked all the houses down for horrid tower blocks. My grandparents lived here first. All the neighbours friends family scattered. My school was Chesterton infants and Juniors. I loved Battersea many years later took my grandchildren it wasn't the same I felt totally depressed even my playground in Battersea park was gone I was there first in 1953. My mum played there 1913. No theatre either shows were put on every Saturday morning. Alongside funfair by Thames. Although we were forced to move to Balham after demolition of my Battersea. Battersea is still in my heart. I was in choir in All saints church Prince of Wales Drive even that burnt down in late 60's also Brownie and Girl Guides 4th Battersea Park. Happy memories
My grandparents lived in Chatham Rd, off the far end of the market in the 1950s, I was often left with them while mum went to work at Courtaulds in the City and dad worked at the large post office on Lavender Hill.
Tom Brown (really) and I hate to say it but I don't remember my grandmothers name. Their house was demolished in the 60s afair and a pub was built there, looking on street view now the pub has gone and there's more of the omnipresent flats. They lived on the left walking up from Northcote Rd, so not the The Eagle.
I used to go down to the market and this is how I remember it

I was born in 1954, so just a youngster at the time.
OT, but when we moved to Merton Park in 1962, we used to drive past the prefabs opposite Wimbledon Stadium, Summerstown, when visiting Chatham Rd, can find next to nothing about them online.
Apart from, that Marc Bolan used to live there at some point (probably when I was passing in the early sixties).
