The church was restored in 1854, though the tower itself dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. There is a room on the first floor, reached by a stair and guarded by a portcullis, which suggests that this was a defensive position for use when the Scots came on one of their cattle raids. The Scots are known to have raided at least as far south as Bradford.
