I was a border there in 1961, a rather cold winter with bleeding lips and chaffed thighs! Yes the lovely sister ann and her heavy ruler, the edge of which was used to such good effect on little boy's knuckles as she went purple with fury, I have mixed feelings about the place. There were a couple of nice nuns that were a ray of sunshine in the rather dark world of the boy who had to endure the bording school side of life. Some of these ladies of Jesus could be very twisted with a huge amount of inner rage which had a handy outlet in the form of a rather small pink creature in shorts with no one to turn to. Several times I was spoon fed my own vomit consisting of boiled eggs which still make me retch! Plenty of weird stuff and a good smattering of violence, which maybe had a silver lining as I have never hit any of my children and have never had the urge to put them in bording school. As I said there were a few really lovely young lady nuns with warm hearts and a love of life thank goodness. I think it was Father Hugg who was the leader of ceremonies at that time. I seem to remember him as quite a normal man without any malice unlike some.

As for the boys, well what a fantastic collection of big-eared buck toothed Bash Street Kids in true monochrome post war tradition. I started the Friends Reunited group some years ago and quite a few of them posted photos which unfortunately I have managed to misplace in my rather large digital collections of nonsense. Have a look on facebook as a couple of weeks back I started a new Visitation Convent group and have already had two ex victims join up. (only joking as Raymond had a good time there I'm glad to say!) I have posted a school photo in the main hall of a lovely collection of said big-eared boys around 1963'ish.

Anyway I wish all the best to you and all who are still in the land of the living and especially those who can remember the dimly lit corridoors of the older building at nightime, populated with the ghostly figures of guard nuns in dark corners with their hands tucked into the opposite sleeve. Cold hands I daresay but pretty Hammer Horror nonetheless. Happy days.
