Tulse Hill Garden Which Bordered Brockwell Park

A Memory of Brixton.

Where the present Tulse Hill Tesco Shop and Esso Petrol station stands today, was the home of my grandfather Alfred John Thomas from the 1920's to the 1950's. Through the 1960's & 70's his daughter Julie Thomas ran the Petrol Station. The Station was in front of their home, a large victorian building (no 109), which had been some sort of club, called Cheriton Court. The grounds behind the house stretched to the Brockwell Park perimeter. Tennis courts filled up one side of the plot, with a formal garden with pond on the other. For me, it was like going to the country, when I went to visit my grandparents with this beautiful garden . At that time, my parents and I lived in a bombed out London neighbourhood with no gardens and greenery, so it was an escape from that greyness.
