Brimson & Roat Hardware And Builders Merchants

A Memory of Bush Hill Park.

My Dad and my uncle had a hardware shop/builders merchants in Bush Hill Park in the late 60s early 70s. I can't remember the name of the road it was on but it was at the end of a small parade of shops and next door there was a radio shop owned by a man called Aubrey. I spent many a school holiday dusting tins of paint in that shop as a young child. Even the smell of a diy shop now brings back memories of those times. Dad used to sell blue and pink paraffin from big tanks out back. I remember old ladies bringing their cans to be filled and they'd swear blue was best because it was more expensive. The truth being it was all the same, a little phiall of blue or pink dye from Esso was added to each. My brother and I used to play in the sharp sand which was sold from the yard at the side of the shop. There was also a glass cutting service in the workshop at the back. Does anyone else remember this shop? I think it was originally called Whites. When Mr White died my dad bought it.
