Elmhurst Preparatory School Camborne

A Memory of Camborne.

My sister and I attended this school. I left in 1964/5 having failed my 11+, my younger sister staying till we moved to South London in 1967. When we were there Miss Blight was headteacher, Mrs Blight a teacher and Jennifer Blight was head girl. My friend Catherine Attlee also attended the school. Catherine had a horse which I managed to fall off and broke my arm. Miss Blight made Catherine take the weight of the sling from the back of my neck which I thought very unfair. My Dad worked at Holman's in Camborne, although we lived in Redruth. He took us to school and we were walked to the bus station at the end of the school day by a very blonde teaching assistant. Sometimes on the drive to school we stopped at a zebra crossing and a lady with a poodle crossed. The poodle would always walk on its hind legs to cross so we always looked out for that lady. I remember passing the roller skating rink and never being allowed in there. There was also a teacher called Miss Curnow. I also had a friend called Linda Freeman whose family had a farm near Camborne, and we used to jump from the haystack. Back then I was Alison Randall. After Miss Blight's I was sent to Tremough convent school in Penryn, our school bus was an old London taxi, about 8 of us would bounce up and down in the back in the days before seatbelts.
