For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Yes name was Norah Cleghorn, and we lived next to her mother in Burrs Road in the early 1950s. Nora was well known for bringing the Donkies along West Road from Jaywick for their daily ride home by the now Martello Restaurant. The children used to run along with the donkies every day, and some helping with the rides. Nora died a few years ago.
I was born in Clacton in 1953 along with my twin Brother. We spent most of our time down by the sea because my Dad worked at Butlins around 1960. My uncles worked on the Pier and my Nan worked in the Arcadeds and we also had an Uncle taking tourist photos along the Beach. I remember many times watching Punch and Judy. Our family names are Box, Elgood, and Mudd. Yours Truely Billy Elgood. ( now living in London. )

My family of 3 brothers and 3 sisters were brought up in Dr Banardoes Homes in Old Road. I often went to the beach along with 9 other boys and Matron, Miss Blomfield from our cottage, Suffolk. We enjoyed many a happy time on the pier and beach. I have a photo of us 9 boys at the base of some steps near the bridge. I left Clacton in 1957
We lived in St Vincent Road, went bottling collecting bottles left on the beach and got the deposits back from the kiosks on the beach front, the some, the mean buggers only gave us half when they realised we were making a few bob, however we beat them by taking all the Macphersons bottles back to the plant in St Andrew Road, they paid full price and sometimes you got a couple of part ...see more
Our Aunt had a really Art Deco property in Jaywick- curvey windows, flat roof the size of a football pitch(it seemed); huge room with amazing folding dividing doors. And the whole place smelt of Jaywick sand. Not polluted sand, but salt, iodine, seaweed. Yum! In the 1950s floods it stood proud on stilts above the sea! And opposite was the enticing Morrocco Café! Verboten. Just up the road was the "Dairy". A ...see more

I loved Christmas here, I remember Mr Booth and his duaghter, but did not like Mr Clark much.
At the time my surname was Grayston. What can I say, 1980 to 1984 were the best of my school years!! - What a fab school. This was largely a medical school at the time I attended, mainly for childeren with heart murmours, breathing problems, etc.. I was sent there at the age of seven until I was eleven for severe asthma. Not only did it turn my illness around, it also gave me the best memories ever. At that ...see more
My grandad, Christopher Jeffrey had the donkeys on the Greensward by Clacton Bowling Club and I remember in 1951 when I was nine years old being given a ride on his donkeys. This postcard brings back happy memories of that long ago visit to my fathers parents. My grandfather had quite a few brothers and sisters, and my dad Ted Jeffrey, often told me stories about them .
Anyone remember the Avenue Club and Cafe run by Wally and Grace? I was their daughter-in-law and I lived at 95 Old Road in a yard above a private garage that looked like a delapidated old place but inside I made it my own. I have so many memories of owner of Vauxhall Koo 443, owner of a catamaran, like to get in touch. Also JP from Crows Feet cottages ...see more
