Share your own memories of Corringham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Way back in the early 1950's my friends and I went everywhere on our cycles. On one occasion three of us set out from Grays and went across the ferry at Tilbury to Gravesend then down the old A road to Canterbury where we had a short break before we returned the round trip was about 100 miles. One of our favorite places for a short trip was to One Tree Hill. We also used to stop there on our way home from Southend, it was very romantic spot and this brings back many memories.
I remember going to this cinema as a party from the school to see "A Queen is Crowned" following the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth
School trip to the Festival Of Britain Dome of Discovery and what a day we all had
Living next door to the hall (In Giffords Cross Cottages) I can remember going to film shows consisting of various shorts. Many were about road safety One I remember well was a section of the film "Champagne Charlie" with Tommy Trinder singing the song.
The houses at the end of the shopping terrace were my home for a number of years. They were called Giffords Cross Cottages. They were decorated for the Coronation celebrations. Attended Herd Lane Primary School and then the new school at Stanford le Hope called Hassenbrook. I played the part of Lysander in A Midsummer Nights Dream with the Hassenbrook Players for the Coronation celebrations in the ...see more
My mum & dad, Pam & Stan Waterfall had the greengrocers shop between 1964 to, I think about 1971. We lived above the shop in a small 2 bedroom place; my sister Sue & I shared a bedroom. There was a hardware store next door. The man in there taught me how to cross my eyes lol! There was a sweet shop on the corner, a hairdressers the other end. We walked to Corringham School down an ...see more
I was born in a bungalow to the left of this photo; it was my nan and grandad's. In fact the back part of the car that can be seen on the right of this photo could well have been my dad's outside of my nan's bungalow; the bungalow is still there. We lived there for 4 months then we were given a house in Fleet Street, Coryton; my dad worked for Vacuum Oil which then became Mobil.
We live one hundred yards beyond these vehicles, towards the bottom end of Woodbrooke Way. Our house was built in 1958, so this photo must be later - and at a guess I'd say around 1960. Lovely nostalgic images though.
I remember well the conker tree. I lived in Hill Terrace untll 1950 when I also went to New Zealand (Gisborne). And I remember the school house, by Danes Corner. I was at Herd Lane school from 1944 till 1950.
I lived in Corringham 1954-1972. The Regent, known to most of us as the old bug'utch or Stanford fleapit, was of course our local cinema. I saw many films there, they were usually nearly a year old before they were shown at the Regent. I'm presuming that a film just a few weeks after its grand London premiere would be expensive to rent and therefore the preserve of opulent cinemas in more upmarket towns, eg State ...see more
