At the northernmost point away from Hailsham we reach Crowborough, a village that became a health resort in the 1870s when Lord Abergavenny followed the advice of a Dr Prince. On the eastern edge of the beautiful Ashdown Forest, the town is now a commuter settlement. On the north side of the village green, the church dates from 1744, including the tower and spire, with additions for Lord Abergavenny made in the 1880s. Beyond the Victorian lych gate is the vicarage, also of 1744.

Harecombe Manor, Southview Road.
I was an nneb nursery nurse at Harecombe Manor between 1964/65. Mrs. Toubia was the Matron and Miss Helps the assistant Matron. The older children were split into family groups of between 5 to 8 children. I was very sad to see the building has gone as it was beautiful. My bedroom was in the front at the top. It belonged in those days to the London borough of Southwark.

Walsh Manor Boys School Crowbourgh
I lived here from 1970 to 1973 The boys I remember were Malcolm Wilkins, Philip Eldridge, Henry fuller, Sean Cope. Teachers were Mr Laycock, Mr Hanner, Mr Trelforth, Mr Clegg, Mr Beardsall and Miss McGuiness. Mrs Fionet was the secretary. I remember the cloakroom we all sat down in one day as someone had stolen Miss McGuiness' purse !!!! She found it !!! Days out at Toad Rock, Tunbridge ...see more

Hookstead School
Does anyone know anything about Hookstead School? My mother's aunts ran it in the 1930s and my mother and her brother spent Christmasses and summer holidays there as children. I'd love to know the history of the place!

Local Artist, David Walsh, Crowborough, Sussex
When I was a young boy, my parents were connected to a David Walsh, who kindly drew a picture of me riding on a tractor (I loved tractors) heading out into the yonder. Does anyone recall David and if so, has any history/contact info for him?

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
