Park Lane Ballroom.

A Memory of Croydon.

Doesn't anyone there remember the Park Lane Ballroom, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights (if you could afford it!. I often wonder what happened to some of the lovely girls that went there and taught me to jive, where are you Noreen, and Rosemary? We used to see great groups there and try to copy them in our front room in Westfield Road, - never made it, (not good enough!). Whatever happened to my mates who were part of The Vampires" ? I used to work at Rollasons at Croydon Airport and once saw Elizabeth Taylor and Mike Todd there with his plane, named Liz. He even bought us lads Dripping sandwiches from the canteen. What luxury!

I remember Park Lane Ballroom Croydon very well.
Good memories, eh, Shirley? Great bands in those days. I used to be there between 1956 and 1961, couldn't do it now though, the old joints won't take it. Best wishes, Frank.
1958 to 1960. Used to catch the train from London, where I worked, to join in the lunch time sessions on a Wednesday, and back again to finish a day's work! Did I dance with you?
I used to frequent The ark Lane Ballroom from 1956 to 1960. I was in a Folk & Blues Band led by Alllan Jessop, with Roger Jarvie on Bass,Both from Addiscombe Green. Alan Rufell on Drums from Woodmasterne Way in Shirley. Dell who went on to The Deltones was the original singer but he left as he preffered Rock & Roll. There was another Allan on Rhythm Guitar and Brian from the Addiscombe area who did Hank Williams material. We had a couple of groupies, sisters Barbara & Bonnie who lived in the Glade Shirley. Wilfred Downing who played Dickon in The Buccaneers was also a fan. We also used to play at The Star Hotel at Broad Green the club was run by Frank Getgood I recall. I would love to know what happened to the guys in the band but my searches .have been fruitless. If anyone knows any of the above, please put me in touch. Great memories.
Hey! Frank Aylard, You must remember The Nomads we played there a lot in those years and, believe it or not, I am still doing that same stuff now, 60 years on.
Do you know any of my old bandmates?
Hello (I don't remember much these days!), but I also used to visit the Star at Broad Green but, at that time we were a bit more into Trad Jazz, Dick Charlesworth, Chris Barber and the like before being caught up with R & R. Also remember Wilf Downing and his hangers on, could never get near to the bar when they were in! BUT, very good times well worth remembering, Thanks.
Worked in the Control Tower at Croydon Airport from 1954 wonderful time and a great Cafe and ballroom where we had Christmas dances.
What about the Orchid Ballroom in Purley , not far from the Airport
Frankie
Met my lovely husband at the Orchid Ballroom. Remember it well.
Hello again Shirley, it was good to read from the old (but young in heart) dancers at the Park Lane, and Orchid Ballrooms from back in the 50's, hey, I also remember a small ballroom in Purley itself, just off the big junction there but can't - for the life of me remember the name of it! (Can't remember a lot of things nowadays, except all the good times we all had then.). Best wishes to all of you. Frank.
Out last night, somebody started the music - Red River Rock. First jived to that at Park Lane in 1959, and I can still dance to.it. loved that one.
Hi there Shirley, Good to hear from you again and know that you are still alive - and (high) kicking! AND that you still remember Johnny and the Hurricanes and the Red River Rock, great music, - don't make it like that any more do they? (Fat lot of good that would do for me these days, it's hard enough to walk, let alone jive!) Still, those memories are still great, eh? I noticed that, on one of my previous contacts I mentioned another Dance Hall I used to visit (in those 'Golden Days', but had forgotten the name - it was the Palm Court Ballroom - sound posh doesn't it?. Hope you are keeping well, and bopping with the best. Cheers, Frank Aylard
