More about this scene
Here we see Victorian children at play in a playground within the castle ruins. The castle, which dates from 1282, was left to slide into decay following its siege during the Civil War in 1645. It held out for the king, and was thereafter slighted by Cromwell's men. The journalist-cum-explorer Henry Morton Stanley was born John Rowlands in a cottage beneath the castle.
