Tom Neal The Village Postman Who Lived In Bottlegate, Downderry

A Memory of Downderry.

Does anyone in Downderry remember the village postman Tom Neal. Tom was born in West Bromwich in 1874, moved to Downderry during WW1 and I believe died in 1955 aged 81. He used to ride on his donkey (Jenny) & trap, delivering the mail. Ask your parents or your grandparents. He used to live in a small cottage in Bottlegate / Buddle Gate. This is the little passageway which lies about 100 yards East of present day Buttlegate. Next door to him (I believe there were only two cottages) lived Edith Smith. Tom is my great uncle. I was in Downderry in 2007 and a couple of villagers were very helpful with their memories. If anyone has any memories or better still photos, of Tom, Edith or their cottages, I would love to hear from them. There is a possibility that Tom & Edith married. Any information will be welcomed. Many Thanks, Robert Marlow.
