Ealing1949 To 1963
A Memory of Ealing.
We moved to Ealing when I was 5 and at 11 I went to NHEHS and we bought the school uniform at Abernethies on the corner of Uxbridge Rd. I loved that area. Next to the taxi rank there was a Polish deli...oh the baked sultana cheesecake. In Uxbridge Rd towards Sanders there was Fullers cake shop, walnut cake there!
The Caprice coffee bar was out of bounds for me but my brother went. Opposite there was briefly a donut shop with the most amazing flavours, very American.
My first job ( with four A levels) was at Rowses at West Ealing but only for only for a few months. And there I learnt to love grated cheese in white crispy rolls with good marmalade. Don't think I've had one since.
On a Sunday afternoon at 13yrs I would cycle along the A40 to Marble Arch, through Ealing Common, Acton,Shepherd's Bush, Notting Hill etc. Then I'd come back via Edgware Rd and the North Cirvular. I just loved Speakers Corner.
