Haven Green Trainspotting In The Fifties
A Memory of Ealing.
I remember seeing CITY OF TRURO come through one evening. It had been taken out of Swindon museum and restored. I also remember seeing the BROWN BOVERI GAS TURBINE on several occassions. It had been ordered by THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY but delivered after nationalsation. Also THE GWR railcars (flying bananas). Jacobs ladder West Ealing was also another point of observation. Here you could see the 14XX loco with the push pull coming off of the Greenford branch with carriages named WREN and THRUSH. Southall footbridge was another location.
Here you could look down onto the signal box and watch the 57XX pannier tanks coming off the Brentford branch. At this time Brentford docks were still open, and the branch was double track. I can remember seeing 57XX's passing each other at the site of the former Trumpers Halte (GWR SPELLING). One train was carrying wood. Back at Southall I watched the endless, Castles, Britannia's and Kings coming over the Iron Bridge by the AEC and roaring towards me and then roar under the footbridge. Of course something was always happening in Southall Loco sheds.
