My Childhood Home

A Memory of Earsdon.

I was born in 1944 and in July 1945 my father, Roland Broome (Roly) took over the tenancy of the Cannon Inn. I remember a very happy childhood with lots of friends. We spent a lot of time outdoors in all weathers.I especially remember playing Cowboys and Indians around the village with up to a dozen of us vying to play the most famous filmstar Cowboys or their just as famous horses.
My Father died in 1954 and my Mother Florrie took over the Tenancy. She remarried in 1955 and after my Stepfather died on Christmas Eve 1956 ahe still kept on the tenancy until July 1957.
I attended the village primary school then after passing the Grading Exam went to Whitley Bay Grammar School. We moved to John Street in the village and I lived there until my marriage in 1966.
I remember the Village with great fondness as everyone knew everyon else and were willing to help in times of crisis.
