Halcyon Days

A Memory of Eltham.

I grew up in Bedgebury rd in 1961 and attended Ealdham sq under the headmaster mf thee and the intrepid Mrs blyde music teacher, had really good schooling and then went to Eltham green which was a huge ,vast building with hundreds of children unlike Ealdham sq, great memories of playing run outs till dark till we got the dreaded call from your mum to come in, playing in derelict houses, playing with fireworks unheard of know and bring able to play out all day at young ages with no mobile to call or text being able to buy the red river bus ticket today's travel card and travel all over London on a bus at 10/11 years old remembering the good weather and the good community spirit and respect we had for everyone, shaws shop in westhorne ave and wallys at shawbrooke rd ,playing kiss chase in brisset park and giving thepark wardens hell in well hall pleasance.all in all Eltham was a great place to live and grow up Gary Taylor

I remember going to Ealdham Square School around the same time. Remember Mr Thew.
Shaws sweet shop was a regular haunt when we moved to Greenway. Used to walk to the Co-op with my Mum - or do errands at the shops on the Avenue for the neighbours. Shame that Eltham could not be put in a time warp! Live in Oz and also have great memories of Eltham
We knew the park warden in the pleasaunce as 'the one armed bandit' he had a faulse arm with a leather glove.
My Aunt on Brisset Rd, opposite the social club had a poster board for the Goumont Cinema, she got free tickets once a month for that.
Often as a kid I waould be sent to the shops on Westhorn Ave, I might have to get a Double Delsy or tin of Kiti kat, but I HAD to give our CoOP number to get the Divy. I still remember that number.
