Worsely Road Housing Estate, Frimley Green, Surrey

A Memory of Frimley Green.

We moved into a brand new Council House on this estate at 8, Hillside Crescent about 1950-51 and lived there until 1960. Before that we were housed in a Nissan Hut in Yateley. My Dad was a carpenter and cycled to work just outside of Camberley, My Mum was a Dressmaker and would take in sewing at home. There were many good times growing up here and we have memories of many children running free. One of the activities was making go karts out of old pram wheels and wood and the local lads would speed down the hill outside our house and round the corner onto St Andrew's Way. There were quite a few grazed knees! Television was just becoming available and the kids would walk around the estate looking for telltale aerials on rooftops. They would knock on the doors to see if they would be allowed to watch children's hour at 5.00pm. Our neighbours were kind enough to allow us in with the threat we would be kicked out if there was any misbehaviour!! There were so many kids back then but it was so much fun. There were three children in our family, my brother Michael born in 1946, me Julia born in 48 and my sister Moira born in the Cottage Hospital Frimley in 1956. We were the Hayward family. I only have a couple of photos. One is of all us kids and our friends in the front garden of our house. We would like to know if anyone still lives there that actually grew up there in the 50's and 60's.

I use to live on the other side of the estate at 123a Worsley Road from 1954 until I got married in 1974. I was born at the Cottage Hospital, Frimley in 1953 and we moved onto the estate from Camberley. We played football in the road and, as you stated, we had go karts which were used there as well or taken to the Recreation Ground behind our house where there was the 'hill', My friends on this side included the Titford's, Smith's, Puttock's, Warren's and Tickner's. My father, Dennis, moved from the estate to Wokingham in 2013. Many happy memories.
Nice to hear about your memories. Yes the recreation ground and the hill were our favourite places to play. You are a few years younger than us but my brother may remember you. He had a good friend Roger Broomfield who lived over on your side. There was a small gang of boys and I would tag along when they would go birdnesting in the woods behind the rec. We would be gone all day and walk miles even ending up on army training land with tanks rolling by. I shudder when I think how dangerous it was. Did our parents worry or even know what we were doing. Those were different times when kids were free!
