Memories Of Days Gone By In Frimley

A Memory of Frimley.

This memory was shared with my lovely Grandmother Cath Grant during my visit from NZ.

"My husband Mick Grant and I, Cath Grant, moved here from Wimbledon in 1961. I had a son called Alan and was expecting my daughter Vanessa in the Summer.
I had never heard of Frimley or Camberley so it was all new and a little bit frightening. I didn't really want to leave Wimbledon as I had a lot of friends and family there.
We lived in a top floor flat and needed more space with my second child due. My husband went to the council offices at the end of 1960 and put our name down for the new estate in Frimley, we visited once, while the houses were being built.

We moved to 11 Sturdy Close where I had my daughter. We lived there for just over a year and it wasn't a happy time. My sister Bunty (Ellen) took me to Walton on Thames while my husband stayed behind to work. I stayed with her for 6 months and then went back to the flat in Sturdy Close. Mick went to the council and asked to have our names out down for a house.

We lived in Sturdy Close for a further 8 months, my husband made friends with Ivor Thornton who knew he would have to move out of his house (his mother had died) and we did a straight swap. We moved into 15 Purley Way very quickly and soon after I had my second daughter Carol. I had always wanted to live at number 15 so was delighted. I still live in the same house, I have since lost my dear husband in 2003 but manage with help from friends, family and carers who work hard to keep me in the house I always loved."
