Memories Of Gildersome

A Memory of Gildersome.

I'm always interested to read memories of Gildersome. I have just visited in October 2018. Just a short visit but it certainly hasn't changed in some respects. The streets are narrower from what I remember but street lane and Finkle lane looked familiar. I was born in the former vicarage now stone gables care home. My father, Rev. Winter was the vicar of Gildersome from the late 30s until 1957 when we moved to Middleton on the Wolds in East Yorkshire. We too attended St. Peters C of E school which was burned down I believe. The church too was demolished as was the school opposite the vicarage, now private housing. I remember the teachers at the school; Mr Johnson, Mrs. Body, Mrs Leathley, Mrs. Avyard and Mrs Wilson. I remember a field behind the school where we had sport (not that I was any good) We used to make slides in the playground when it snowed. The people I remember were Sheila Barras, Pauline Brewster, Christopher Pickles. The doctor was Dr. Wilson in Finkle lane. Mr Bowers had a shop Mr Beevers also had a shop and Colbeks had the bakers on the Green. I remember the cobbler (missing some fingers) as well as the rag and bone man and his horse. Coal used to get delivered. The maiden mills still existed. Mrs. Lodge had a shop on Harthill near where we used to go for school dinners. (My mother Dorothy was in charge of school meals) My spelling may be incorrect as we only heard names but not the spelling. I later went on to study art in York and migrated to Australia. I worked for the NSW Education Department and retired from 40 years of teaching Visual Arts and special Education in 2012. My children are authentic Aussies! I can remember so much more.

Hello Kathryn
I have just read your memory and I remember all you have written about. At was wonderful to read it all.I too went to the church school in Gildersome from 1947 to 1954. I lived in Greenfield Drive untill I married and then moved to Churwell.
In 1966 I emigrated to Perth Australia and never went back to England until 2000. What a change in Guildersome, all the mills gone to be replaced with housing estates.
I have been back several times since and always enjoy seeing the village.

Hi Kathryn,
Your memories were very well received by the "Gildersome Past Present & Future" Facebook group, with whom they were shared. Many of the members were keen to reconnect with you.
Thanks for your comments.
