Barnsole Road

A Memory of Gillingham.

It sounds really funny and familiar to hear:: Jezreels, Canada House ( where I went after my daughter was born 1986 !), Littlewoods, Lefevres, Darland Banks - I love it.
I lived in Barnsole Road from 1969 - 1979 and loved all of it. I went o Barnsole Road School - my Mum was a teacher there, Mrs Peatfield- yes she's still alive, now 89 yrs old.!
Then I went to Upbury Manor School, which was great, a new school with brill facilities, loved it. I played at Gillingham Park, went to Darland Banks too and Luton Wreck.
Gillingham was a nice place back then, even Lower Gillingham, I went to visit friends there often, no problems, all very nice people.
Back then I was Susan Peatfield. Does anyone remember my Dad's butchers shop in Canterbury Street, on the corner of St Johns Road.???

Love this site and looking at the pictures, what great memories.
Thank you
Sue

Hello Susan, l remember both of your butchering relatives and even my Uncle Alf Peatfield who was married to my great aunt Fanny (the sister of my grandmother) I was a little scared of her as a small boy as she had what were then called grave marks on her hands (l have them now). My mother was Ruth Fleming - the daughter of George Hadaway). She died back in 2002. Stewart (Stuart?) was her favourite cousin. I must have met you at the house on Barnsole Road when we were both children - though the dates you mention seem to conflict with this. We had once lived on Third Avenue before moving to Wigmore around 1958. I moved to London in about 1968 and lived here - happily - since. We have two daughters and four grandchildren - all of who are a delight. I went to Barnsole Road Primary too and suffered from a sadistic teacher called Miss Perris who was happy to slap bare legs, wrap knuckles with a ruler and box small heads. Different times eh? In spite of this l was a happy little boy and - though now grey haired - still am. With best wishes,
Andrew
Hi Susan,
We lived in Barnsole Road too, opposite Second Avenue. Pretty sure I remember you and I think I worked as a delivery boy for the butchers shop. You may have known my brother Mark who went to Uobury too.
I've been trying to think of the name of the people who ran the paper shop on the corner of 3rd Avenue, can you help?
