Goldthorpe Chemist

A Memory of Goldthorpe.

I was born in Bolton on Dearne in 1948; my grandfather was Guy Lewis the Goldthorpe chemist whose shop was in Doncaster Road. My grandparents lived in Market Street (number 5)
Has anyone a photograph that might show the chemists shop? My grandfather retired about 1963.

Hi David. My father had the butchers shop next door to Guy Lewis chemist, number 7 Doncaster road. When our landlord sold the whole block, which also contained Fred Revils pork butchers and Adam's tripe shop, our butchers business went round on to Lockwood road. Where sadly it faded away fairly quickly, people would not walk the 50 yards or so off the main road, which was a busy place then ,with numerous other butchers. Was about 1962? I think. I remember mr Lewis well, he was a proper gentleman. He employed the most beautiful lady called Audrey, who lived I think at Sawsby, shecwas wonderfully glamorous. Happy days for this old guy. Hello Edwin - thank you for the information, and so sorry that it has taken so long to reply ! I remember the butchers shop next to my grandpa's and also another butcher who I think was Tommy Spibey ?? although I am not 100% sure of the name. As a small boy I remember going to the market to buy fresh fish with my grandma, and also as a special treat been taken on the bus to Doncaster. I remember my grandma buying sausages from Davey's in Doncaster - they were very good !! Happy days, as you say. David Lewis
