Turnbull Road Off Reddish Lane

A Memory of Gorton.

I lived in albert avenue off turnbull road from 1944 until 1957. It was a great place to live.We skated on Turnbull road, had a rope round a lamp post as a swing, played on bikes.Went to Debdale park played tennis if anyone had a racket. My friends were Elsie Brassington,Joan Barlow,Peter Jones who's father had a barber's on the corner of turnbull road.We went to the Rota cinema for Saturday matinees, when older to Sunday night's to meet the lads!!. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me ,also my brother Harry Matthews .
Having just recently found this web-site, this note for Renee Mathews (or anyone interested in reading these comments) may never reach her.
I lived in Highfield Place, just along Debdale Lane from Albert Ave during the war years. I went to Aspinal and knew Peter Jones, his father cut my hair - my very first crew-cut.. My friend Brain Morrison lived at 11 Albert Avenue and I used to sing duets at Aspinal with Beryl Denton, accompanied on piano by Mr Garvey - very embarrassing at the time! Beryl lived near the Turnbull Road end. There used to be a Cooperative Store on the corner of Turnbull Rd where we took our ration books for our weekly groceries. Cheese was in a block then and cut with a wire.
Vegetables were bought from Hardman's Greengrocery on Reddish lane opposite the Pomona pub.
I moved to Australia with my family in 1951 and now live in Tasmania. So much water under the bridge since those days, but that war-time life existed, and it's nice to know that a few of us are still around.
Regards to all that may remember collecting shrapnel on the way to school, the air raid sirens and the pom-pom guns in action on Reddish Bridge
