David Greig Shop In The High Street

A Memory of Grays.

David Greig was opposite the Queen's Hotel, next door was Boots the Chemist, then Sydney Greys the electrical and TVs etc. This is where I bought my first guitar. Just opposite was Pains, a little farther on was Bastiani's ice cream parlour, then M&S and Woolworths. The old railway crossing had a signal box, so when a train came, the signal man had a large wheel he had to turn to open and close the gates. Over there was the CoOp shop and bank (where Jill Trip worked - girl friend of mine), Boatman's famous clock, and who could forget Church Walk. Opposite was the Civic where, when I was at Quarry Hill School, which at that time was behind the police station, we had our dinner. Later it was Bata shoe shop. Hope some of my memories remind you of Grays. I worked at David Greig's in the early '60s as a boy, along with Bernard, Dapphne, Lorraine, Pauline and a few others - hope to make contact with anyone who might know me. cyrilchapman42@gmail.com; in this photo opposite david greigs was the shop where the workmen are putting a new front;
