Education On Crutches!

A Memory of Harlow.

After attending Loughton County High School for Girls from 1952 to 1958, I then continued my education at Harlow College of Further Education. This was a two year full time Course, supposedly including languages - lack of language teachers makes me add this bit! - but I so enjoyed learning shorthand and typing along with business studies. Miss Hopkins (who later married and became Mrs Major) was such a good and patient teacher. I became Student of the Year for my efforts, much to my parents delight.

During 1960 I had a major spinal operation and was eventually allowed to attend my classes with the aid of crutches.

Sadly I understand this building was demolished.

I would love to hear from any pupils who were there during 1958 - 1960. I particularly remember a Danish girl who wore such lovely clothes and I admired so much because she was learning skills in another language. (Amazingly after my marriage in 1964, my late husband and I travelled frequently to Denmark with our children as he had Danish friends living there. I lost touch with Hannah Sorenson as she was then.)

I also enjoyed the day release boys - having been to an all girls school for six years!!

Hello Anne!
I remember you at Harlow College! My name is Christine Mottram (now Nordan). We were in the same classes together! I remember the Danish girl, I didn't like her very much; she kept saying "in Denmark, we have. or do....such and such.". I remember you brought a photo of yourself to class one day, showing you presenting something to the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, when he visited Harlow!!!
I remember several of the other girls in our classes, including Celia, Shirley Fowler and Margaret or something Connell. I think she was your friend. My friend from Old Road named Priscilla Ryder also attended, but didn't stay long.
Where do you live now? I live in America, in the beautiful state of North Carolina; have been here since 1969 when I married this gorgeous American. We did live in Old Harlow, managed to get a rental house from Harlow Development Corporation for a few years in the mid to late 70's. But then returned to the States!
Please get in touch with me. You can reach me via email - my address is cmnfrlinden@aol.com.
Woul love to hear from you, very soon!
Regards,
Christine
