My name is Geoff and I attended Broxhill School from 1967 until 1972. The school was a pretty substandard Secondary Modern School during my time there but, I understand, it became a Comprehensive in 1973. My family moved from Hackney East London to Dulverton Road Harold Hill in 1951 to 1962. I started my school days in Straight Road school, followed by Bosworth, then London Road school in Romford. Lived in Retford Road Harol Hill from 1950 to 1972 name was Margaret Gatrell. Went to Mead infants /juniors then to Harrowfield secondary school. My first teacher at Meads was called Mrs Fenton. The field opposite my house was turned into a football pitch and we used to go to dances in the club house. I was interested to read your account of Quarles and Bosworth schools. The primary school set my opinion of education, we were constantly beaten for minor infringements, made to stand on a chair hands on head whilst a female teacher hit our legs with a ruler. Does anyone remember the Kelly’s from 184 Bridgwater Road, Paul, June and Sandra, moved in 1953, moved from Islington. We all went to brook side school, Miss Basket headmistress comes to mind, then on to Quarles. I married in 69 and bought a caravan in Noak Hill, 87 North End, Cummings Hall Lane. I moved to Harold hill in 58 from shoreditch to Montgomery crescent then to 49 gooshays drive and my sisters Pat,Brenda and Sandra my brother Paul came in 63.I moved to Australia in 1978 with my wife Jacqueline and now live in Perth. Oh my gosh. I remember Ms. Knapton and her dog pickles. I wish I had something pleasant to say about her, but I don't. She gave me the cane six times on my right hand because of skipped school one afternoon. Not very nice. Pauline Veil-Slight
I went to the infant school then dycorts then harrowfields, , I remember going to school in the smog, we always had fog, snow, the milk cart was horse and cart, rag and bone the same, names like the tattems, ginger hinde, reynolds, ginger and myself went to the methodise church boys club, coach trip every year,we would go to the manor, fishing, football, sports day was there every year, half the school ...see more
My family moved from Tottenham in 1949. There was only 5 children and Mum and Dad at the time. Nice new terraced house in Faringdon Ave - Gooshayes end. I was born in that house in 1954. My younger sisters (twins) were born in Oldchurch Hospital in 1961. I attended Mead Infant/Mead Junior schools. Helped across the road by Mrs Watts the lollipop lady.
