This was an Augustinian abbey founded in 1135 by William Fitz Alan. The Fitz Alans were powerful Shropshire landowners; the family was later to inherit Arundel (where the family is still based) in 1243. From William both the Stuart royal line in Scotland and the English line of the Earls of Norfolk descend.
