Henbury Court

A Memory of Henbury.

I have memories of Miss Holden at Henbury Church School. She was lovely. After that it was a move to The Manor school, where the infamous Mr Freke would use a ruler over our young knuckles if we broke some rule. My final school in the area was Henbury Court Junior and Miss Weeks was the teacher. She was quite strict, but fair, and had a twinkle in her eye. I think she lived somewhere behind the library at Westbury. She would read passages from "Moonfleet" while we sat in the sun in the field behind the school. Quite often I was asked to read passages from the Bible at morning assembly. Such happy, sunny days of playing in the stream, at Blaise Castle and what we called "The bombed out building" near the Rudrum house. We also scrumped apples from the orchard and were chased by German Shepherd dogs who guarded the place.
