Nostalgic memories of Heswall's local history

Share your own memories of Heswall and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I remember being in Heswall Hospital at Christmas and a Nativity scene being in the entrance to the ward. I used to sleep on a wooden 'Nelson' to help drain the mucous from my infected lung, with the bi-fold doors wide open for the fresh air, we had apricot jam sandwiches for tea, and to this day I dislike apricot jam. The older girls used to bath us. I must have spent quite a few months there, after being in ...see more
My stay in this ward is full of happy memories. I remember Wally the porter pushing my trolley through the basement, I can remember seeing lots of what I presume were water pipes to get to the x ray department, with today's health & safety issues I am sure this wouldn't be allowed now!! The friend I made during my stay (July/October 1977) was Jane Pennington, Jane and I shared a birthday party while in ...see more
I am not sure if this is the hospital, but it looks very much like it. I left the hospital in 1957, aged 13, and remember the school on the same site and two boys taking it in turns each evening to polish all the shoes. I was very happy there.
I recall staying at this place in 1970. As a child I suffered from asthma and was referred here by Alder Hey. If it's the same place, it had a Lancaster bomber in its gardens. I remember a boy called Ian who was in with nerves, such a nice lad, and going to north Wales on day trips...fond memories.
I stayed on the 'Florance Gibson' ward from January to December of 1979. Although it was a very difficult time for myself and my parents, my memories are very precious to me. I got to see Paul Mccartney for free that year, camped out and did lots of things. I remember Nurse Skillings, nurse Morgan, Mrs Daniel, Mrs Thomas. I wonder if anyone remembers me? Ian Hunt
I spent most of my childhood in and out of the hospital and have such wonderful happy memories. I was usually on Charlie Mac ward (Charles McAllister). I remember Sister Bromley (spoke to her only a few of years ago), Dr Burston and Peter Bush. They made a film of me as a baby then completed it in Myrtle Street when I was about 12. I loved the steam roller, and after clinic visits mum and I went into Heswall and I was bought lovely fruit lollipops as a treat. So lovely to see the photos.
Hi, does anyone remember the large portrait on the wall in the entrance of the Margaret Bevan Home, I am not sure which home it was, can anyone tell me where all the homes were besides Heswall? My email is: joytotheworld@yours.com Thank you in anticapation. Joyce xxx
I was at the Royal Hospital for a few months in 1971, a wonderful memory rekindled due to working on the Wirral lately...38 years since I was there but I remembered just where it was while passing through Heswall. I remember Nurse Hessian very well, a happy go lucky young woman,v ery kind too. Eric Sullivan, Jimmy Mcgrail are names that spring to mind, Wendy Owen, a girl from my home town of Wrexham. I remember ...see more
I really don't remember much about Heswall, but it holds a special place in my heart, as that is where my mother found me. I had been born in May 1959 in Wrexham, but for some reason was not taken home by the women who gave birth to me. I was moved to Heswall. My soon to be sister, was training to be a nurse, Margaret Petty, and she told her mother about me. My mother came over to see and decided to adopt ...see more
As a student nurse in 1969 I started my career at Heswall on Lady Jones ward. This was a ward for children with severe mental and physical disabilities and Sister Clarke ran the show. It was such a fabulous time and as a young nurse I have memories of the night warden who managed switchboard, cursing and swearing at us when we arrived home late and without a pass out. It was such a pretty little hospital and yes ...see more
