More about this scene

This 18th-century house links the family with the first Hill arrivals. It stands on the foundations of a fort built about 1639 by Sir Arthur Hill after he left a post at Carrickfergus Castle. It was given Royal approval and the garrison was paid for. King William III stayed there on his way to the Boyne. About 70 years later this house was begun; despite its delicate, fashionable doorway, it was a Crown establishment. It still allowed its store of arms to be taken by the dissidents of 1798. In 1890 the Government was complaining of the continuing cost, and his Lordship compensated with a lump sum. The garrison were allowed to end their service.
