More about this scene
Kendal Castle was built by the Normans to the east of the town, probably by Ivo de Tailbois, the first Lord of Kendal in the late 12th century. It still commands fine views to the north and south-east. The castle was described as 'ready to drop down with age' by the beginning of the 17th century. Katherine Parr, Henry VIII's sixth and surviving wife, was born here in 1512; at that time the castle was in the hands of Sir Thomas Parr.
