Summer Holidays

A Memory of Kilby.

I was born in 1948 and my Grandma lived at Brook Bridge House in Kilby. I can remember hating living in Industrial Huddersfield but only because I could not wait to get to Kilby for my weeks holiday in the summer. There was a farm in the village, a guy called Neil lived there who was my age, very young! I used to go up there as much as possible and play with the animals, it was just heaven, I remember Mrs Moynihan at the post office. She was lovely.

My aunts Phil and Madge used to be there as well. We did not have an inside bathroom at Brook Bridge House, just a toilet half way down the garden. Lovely gardens with loads of gooseberry bushes I always used to cry when I had to leave my grandma and go back home. I just loved Kilby.

Hi, I've just seen your memory of Kilby, in particular your memory of Brook Bridge House. I lived there with my Mum & Dad and brother from 1969 to 1986 when I got married and moved to Fleckney. Were there stained glass windows either side of the fireplace in the living room? Dad took them out, replaced the fire with a wood burning stove and put patio doors in so we could see the garden. I know we bought the house from a Mr Clifford but I don't know how long he lived there. It was great growing up in the village, going to the village school. I think there was only about 18 of us at the school.
Hi, so sorry I missed your comment. It is three years since you wrote on here and I did not get any notification via my email address. When I lstayed with my Grandmother at Brook Bridge House, it was still very old fashioned. There was a kitchen which led to the living room. There was no bathroom and no indoor toilet!! I do not remember stain glass windows but yes there was a fireplace. There was a dining room, just to the left of the front door. The last time I was actually in the house it would have been in the late fifties. I remember the village so very well though, sadly it has changed a lot. I had a drive through it about ten years ago and hardly recognised it. I am so glad I saw your message. My email is suemet@gmx.co.uk x
