The Old Forge

A Memory of Mells.

This home also belonged to our family The Hill family; My parents owned it for a few years. The house came with a goat named Billy who was very naughty and ate our vegetables from the veg garden .
I was 4 when we moved in and this photo was taken whilst we owned the house in 1965. I am now 61 !
It was a gorgeous house and we were always told as young children that Little Jack Horner had lived here once upon a time .
Lovely memories .

I am trying to find someone who knows what the thatched house was between the presently ruinous 'Cottage' at Little Green and your house. The thatch of The Cottage collapsed in 2013 I think. The thatched house in question was attached to The Cottage and was entirely demolished soon after 1965. Frith's have an earlier photo of it. Was it a beer house or Inn? Seems to have had a such a sign between its first floor windows.
Can you help please? With thanks

I had to check with my Mum who is 93 and her memory is fading . She didn’t know what the thatch building was used for but I have received much more information from a lady in Australia whose grandfather WSmith owned the house as far back as the records go until selling it to us ( I think my parents brought it 1964 . She informed me of lots of interesting facts about The Old Forge and that hops was a mainstay at Little Green ( of course ) and the barn was originally used as a brewery , but no mention of the thatch .
Sorry I can’t tell you more .
