My Memories Of Vigo Camp

A Memory of Meopham.

My memories of Vigo camp Meopham
My memories of Vigo are somethings I will never forget.
I was born in Chatham, Kent in 1948.
For reasons unknown to me, we ended up in a Vigo camp. The Nissen hut we were in must have been an officers mess. i.e it had a lots of rooms and also a lot of toilets.
In the winter it was very cold. But Spring and Summer were a haven for a child growing up amongst the rhododendron woods.
My sister Pat was the eldest of us four Adams children. She also had a friend, if I remember, called Josey Russell and between them they looked after us little ones.
I remember Vigo school, and the headmistress called Miss Randal. She was nice, but some of the children knew we were from the camps so they could be a little cruel at times.
There was also, an old lady who owned a lot of goats, which we used to love to go and see.
The one things that us kids used to love to do was sneak through the woods and come out onto Happy Valley. It, then, had one or two chalets on the hills.
The only sad time I had in the camp was when I was badly mauled by a dog which someone had neglected. A man called Mr Lewis had pulled the dog off of me which saved my life.
I remember a few names. Roy Pew. I think he had a paper shop, and the name Teddy Bingle went on to own a butchers shop.
So many memories of a by-gone camp near Meopham.

Hi. I used to live opposite this camp, or what was left of it. I used to play over in the old parade ground in the 1950’s. When I got older I used to wait for the school coach to take me to the Northfleet School for Girls. I remember there used to be an old post office over in the camp which was run by a Miss Hendon and a man who used to keep antique buses. Like you I have many happy memories about those lovely woods! I also attended the Vigo School which was run by Miss Randal. My parents also lived in one of those nissen huts - before I came along.
I remember Roy Pugh well. In my teens he and I plus two others formed a little rock band and practised in the Harvel village hall.
Many happy memories of this area. Friends like Christine Wells (whose parents ran the Fareways Cafe), Loraine Cowell (whose dad played in the Harvel cricket team), Linda Alexander, Pat Nesbit etc.
My parents used to drink in the Amazon & Tiger pub and when I grew up I also used to go in there.
My grandfather used to drink in the Vigo Inn.
Many happy memories of that area!
