The Mumbles railway began as a tramroad authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1804; it carried limestone and coal until one of the original shareholders, Benjamin French, used a horse-drawn wagon to carry passengers on it, thus making it the first passenger railway service in the world. It became very popular in 1879 when steam power was introduced, and it was extended to Mumbles Pier in 1898.
