Penketh In The 1940's

A Memory of Penketh.

Memories of Penketh County Junior School, from 1944-49: Miss Routledge, Infants class, roaring coal firs to dry out wet clothing, I still count in my head using those dots on the frieze! Friday afternoon with a personal toy!
Miss Stanley's class, she was sick, and Mrs Morrow came to teach some of us in that second class, in the hall.
Miss Ilsley - scared the living daylights out of us! Grew beans seeds in blotting paper, in jam jars on the windowsill. She lived on Coniston Avenue, didn't often walk that way home!
Junior School: Miss Stone, rode her bike to school, awarded me two book prizes: a book of Crosswords and a Stamp Album, once ran beside her bike all the way to Broad Oak Avenue!
Mrs Godfrey, lovely lady, North West corner classroom. Mr (Gunga) Hayes, our first male teacher in the 'Scholarship' (11 Plus) class, more bullies in thaht class!
Mr Griffiths was Headmaster when I was in the Infants, Mr Latham when I was in Juniors - Richard Latham was always kind to me!
Passed my 11 plus, went to an Interview at Wade Deacon, because I was younger than most, was accepted, but didn't go, that's another story!
Mostly remembered as a happy experience, still have strong visual memories of the classrooms and playing field, not so much of my fellow pupils!
