Monks And Sons

A Memory of Purfleet.

Hi I used to work for Monks and Sons in the 1970's, it was a very nice place to work. There was Dennis Monk and Jack Monk who used to run the business. They repaired Fords steel pallets and made 14ft dia by 400ft long steel chimney stacks for oil refineries for other countries. They were made in 50ft sections for transport. In the 1960's they made barges and launched them from the yard. The two square buildings were offices and one was a store room and canteen above. The two big warehouses had electric over head cranes plus all the machines to make different items. Dennis was a good boss to work for and have a laugh and joke with. He had another brother, Harold - he owned the Mount Motel on Brentwood by pass 128. I remember going over to Southies for their lovely pasties and hot cheese rolls. It's a shame that Monks has gone as I had some good memories - best place I worked.

Andrew, my mum was Olive Monk. Uncle Harold owned Ye Olde Plough House in Bulphan. All brothers and sisters have now passed. My dad Leslie Machin passed in 2000. I live in the States.
