Nostalgic memories of South Ockendon's local history

Share your own memories of South Ockendon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My family returned to South Ockendon in 1964, although both sets of grandparents were in South Road and Broxburn Drive. First lived in Clayburn Gardens, then in 1969 we moved to 34 Cruick Avenue. Small cul-de-sac, originally with the Dudley's, Trebes, Westley's and others. Grew up with the Price's, Taylor's, Coggin's, Darby's, Munday's and loads more. I left several times, only to return to 34. Finally made ...see more
Does anyone remember Dawley Green? The Gamage family lived there until 1960. One girl and four boys. The Knights of Averley was just round the corner.
My story begins in 1951. Born in London but moved to Easington Way three months later, then onto Cruick Avenue. House number 107, opposite Mardyke School. My first memory is 1956? Starting junior school, first day bumped heads with Neil Rayson who lived at the beginning of Cruick...whatever happened to Neil? 5 years at junior school and names I remember are Geoff Buck who married the girl next ...see more
I moved to 69 Cruick Avenue with my parents on my 5th birthday, 13th June 1960. We lived next door to The Wilsons (67) and the Scriveners (71). I started school at Mardyke the following September. I remember Mr Swanbury being the caretaker with Charlie Beck his assistant, who later became the caretaker. Mr Condon was the headmaster and later Mr Durham. The teacher to steer clear of was Mrs Peart, bit of a ...see more
I remember walking by Ford Place down the winding road to the Mardyke to go fishing for tiddlers with my brother - when we crossed the river in the spring we could go to the woods on the other side and pick bluebells. It is a lovely memory of my childhood days. I can also remember a fairground - maybe at Easter time on Daiglen Drive (or maybe Foyle Drive), and when I was a little bit older, we ...see more
Just read the memory by Ian Pescott. Mardyke Hill and stream in the summer, as you say, was a perfect spot for kids. It was about half an hour walk from Foxglove Crescent where most of us lived or a 10 min ride on a "bitza" bike. These were normally fixed wheel made up of other old bikes. Problem was if you did not move your legs out wide enough going down the hill, the fixed wheel drive made sure the peddals ...see more
We moved from Romford Road to Cherwell Grove in 1962 and moved to Australia in 1969. My memories are of wonderful times playing football in Belhus Park, fishing at Buckles Lane and drinking at The Royal Oak. Jim Travers was the football coach who a lot of kids owe so much to, he was great. Attended Holy Cross Juniors and then Culverhouse when it first opened. When we lived at Romford Road I used to ...see more
I grew up first in flats opposite the shops in Daiglen Drive (I was born in Islington), then when I was about 3 we moved to Eskley Gardens. It was a great place - the old Belhouse mansion was derelict at that time, and we (my brothers Steve and Bern) used to play in it, marvelling at the sloping floors. Our house was made of something called scotswood pine, which as far as I recall was as thin as paper, so ...see more
